Vehicle Description
For consignment, a 1940 Ford Deluxe convertible showing 15,349 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This blue beauty now features a 350ci V8 under the hood and a Mustang II front end under the nose.
Exterior
Two stage Dark Teal Metallic is the color of choice here and it looks fantastic on this '40 Ford! With a pointed locomotive front end and sloping rear, the profile epitomizes the era and stands the test of time as a classic and the black canvas top is icing on the cake. The wide fenders gleam brightly, reflecting light from above, while the straight panels are accentuated by the polished trim on the shoulder line. Out back, Corporal badge shaped tail lights flank the broad, smooth door to the luggage compartment. Swinging back up the front, the hood trim on the nose is spectacular as are the vertical grille slats, and chrome headlight bezels with deco style trim on the marker lights. Street rod vibes start at the 15-inch Polished American Racing Torque Thrust wheels wrapped in staggered size tires that aid in the slightly raked stance. Brightwork and paint are fantastic and the single imperfection is a series of under paint scratches and a few bubbles.
Interior
Various shades of gray tweed cover the door with geometric inserts and shadow shapes and other than some patina on the driver's door, they present nicely and are mirrored in color by the split bench, rear bench, and back side walls, all in very nice condition. A Lecarra, four spoke leather wrapped steering wheel offers a hot rod introduction to the clean, body colored dash housing white faced VDO gauges while on top of the dash is an AM/FM/Cassette player over the dash grille and billet knobs while a vintage clock ahead of the passenger brings it all back to 1940. Footwells and floors are lined in more gray tweed and, not surprisingly, so is the clean trunk.
Drivetrain
With some attention to detail, much of the engine has been painted with the exterior color creating nice visual congruence. Here, we have a 350ci V8 with a 4-barrel carburetor and mated to a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission and power is routed to a Ford 8" axle our consignor says is from a Maverick. The car runs on a 12 volt system.
Undercarriage
It's very clean underneath where the X-frame takes center stage and guides dual exhaust to back, coming from headers and connecting to glasspack style muffler on the way to a twin chrome tipped finish. A Mustang II front end is on board and brings power steering with it, while leaf springs are utilized in the back. This rod is equipped with power brakes and discs are the call up front while drums back them up.
Drive-Ability
The tweed interior provides a comfortable perch and after a few taps of the gas, the carb is loaded and the V8 rumbles to life and we are on our way around the test loop. This is a well mannered car that does everything right, from handling, to accelerating, to stopping. Side mirrors on both sides are a welcome feature as the blind spot can be sizable, but worth it when you consider the cozy and weather proof environment that's created by the top. All functions work as intended and we roll the '40 back to the mall. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Good clean fun. That's how we would categorize this build and some of that fun will happen in the sun as the top comes down allowing the wind to blow through your curly locks, or whatever you're rockin' on top of your head. The brochures were full of V8 optimism in 1940, and now you can be too!
