Cruisin Classics is pleased to present to you this numbers-matching 1970 LT1 Corvette convertible with both hard and soft tops. Only 1,287 of these 370hp cars were produced in 1970 and only a fraction of those are still on the road - even less with their original engine and transmission. 1970 was the first year that GM offered the LT1 - a high-performance racing-inspired engine offered in both the Corvette and the Camaro Z/28. The LT1 is a 350ci 5.7 liter V-8 with solid lifters, a forged steel crankshaft, 4-bolt main block, 11:1 compression, impact-extruded pistons, high-lift camshaft, low-restriction exhaust, an aluminum intake, 4-barrel carburetor, and finned aluminum valve covers. Corvettes ordered with the LT1 got domed hoods with LT1 decals and they could not be ordered with A/C. This Corvette comes to us with a stack of handwritten pages itemizing an engine rebuild (about 1K miles ago), the addition of power brakes, a power steering rebuild, a wiper door system rebuild, a new tilt/telescopic steering column, a rebuilt distributor, a vacuum system rebuild, a chassis lube, and repacking of the front wheel bearings. There are no dates or shop information on these pages, just items and dollar amounts. Hence, we can not attest to any of that information - we can only describe it as we see it and let others interpret the paperwork as they may. Let's dig deeper into the details of this cool C3 Corvette...
According to the trim tag, this Corvette was born with Donnybrooke Green paint (982) and a Saddle vinyl interior (418). The Saddle interior has remained over the years, but the car is now wearing a coat of white paint with white hard and soft tops. It appears that the paint job was done quite some time ago and it is now in driver quality condition with chips, spider webbing, touchups, checking, and crazing. From 10 feet away these imperfections can't be seen, but you'll notice them upon closer inspection. The look of this C3 is iconic, with it's swooping curvaceous lines that make it look like it's going fast while sitting still. Up front you'll find a vented hood with chrome vent trim and LT1 decals, a gleaming chrome bumper with split eggcrate grille, a cross-flags badge, and the signature Corvette pop-up headlights. As you move around the side you'll see bright windshield trim, a chrome drivers mirror, hideaway wipers, bright rocker trim, and "Stingray" fender badges above eggcrate side-vents. The manually-operated white soft top with plastic rear window is in good condition, as is the white hard top with tan headliner. The wheel and tire combination is a perfect fit for the car, with 5-slot grey Rally wheels adorned with centercaps and beauty rings all wrapped in white-letter BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires. Around back are two chrome bumperettes, round chrome-ringed taillights, and chrome rectangular exhaust tips. The gas cap door on the rear deck wears a cross-flags badge that matches the one up front on the nose. Peek under the rear end to find a spare kit with a full spare tire.
Raise the forward-lifting hood to reveal a clean stock engine bay. At the center is the original numbers-matching LT1 350ci V-8 with a CTK suffix code - denoting it as a 370hp paired with a manual transmission and transistor ignition (a true LT1). The orange block is topped with heads (3927186) that could have been on a 300, 350, or 370hp engine. Correct finned aluminum valve covers with cross-flags insignia sit on top. The aluminum intake is paired with a Holley 4-barrel carburetor (3972121) specific to the 370hp engine. A chrome air cleaner with "350 Turbofire 370hp" decal tops it all off. We're not done with numbers-matching parts yet - the distributor (1111491) is correct for a 370hp with transistor ignition and the alternator (1100884) is also correct for a 370hp. The original smog pump system is still present, though the belt has been removed to render it inoperative. Also still present is the chrome ignition cover. The engine is outfitted with a newer-looking power steering system and the brake booster, master cylinder and lines all look new as well. Disc brakes can be found on all four corners, assuring excellent stopping ability. Exhaust flows from cast manifolds through newer pipes and mufflers before exiting the rear with a distinct rumble. Mated to the LT1 V-8 is a numbers-matching Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission that sends power to the rear wheels with Positraction gears.
Swing open the drivers door and the courtesy lights pop on to illuminate a nice Saddle Tan interior. The door cards are OEM-style with logo door handles and crank windows. The good-looking bucket seats are tan vinyl with both flat and woven textures and they look like they've been re-covered in the recent past. Splitting the buckets is a woven vinyl armrest and a console that is home to the emergency brake, a chrome shifter with finger-lifts and a black boot, and controls for the working vents, heater, and fan. The black shift plate appears to be newer and it displays the correct data for an LT1 370hp engine. The center console flows up to the dash where you'll find a working Delco AM/FM push-button radio and gauges for fuel, temp, battery, and oil as well as a clock (inop). Controls for the working hideaway 2-speed wipers are just above, under the crack-free dashpad. Ahead of the driver is an OEM 3-spoke steering wheel - freshly wrapped in brown leather - on a tilt and telescopic column. The wheel frames a 160mph speedometer and a 7K tachometer. The odometer shows 42,058 miles though the title claims Odometer Discrepency. The flip-up headlights work just as they should and so do the dash lights. The Tan carpet is good qualtiy and it is in generally good condition with some light fading and discoloration typical of a convertible. If you've always wanted an LT1 Corvette but just couldn't stomach the prices of show-quality examples, this is your chance to get an all-numbers-matching driver-quality 2-top convertible for a price that won't break the bank! Rare Corvettes like this one don't come around every day - this is your chance to own a genuine piece of American automotive history! Don't delay, give our friendly staff a call today!
