Vehicle Description
For consignment, a 1990 Ford LTD Country Squire LX station wagon showing 14,564 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This is a consignor stated one owner car and one of just over 6,000 that were built in 1990. Our example benefits from newer exhaust, A/C, and tires with an early 2024 date code.
Exterior
Our time capsule begins with two stage Twilight Blue Metallic paint covering the long panels and boxy profile. Long rear side windows start where the sedan would end, and the rear overhang is almost as long! The chrome framed grille and bezels are upright over a large, chrome bumper. The hood goes on forever just before the raked windshield takes over and lifts the roof high, allowing for large windows that create an airy feel and open greenhouse. The roof rack is an attractive piece, adorned with matching woodgrain decals that add a welcome dimension to the roof line. Eleven years earlier, National Lampoon's Vacation would double the tail lights on their LTD wagon, but we think it's much more attractive in factory form, handsome lenses bookending the tailgate and embedded third brake light. Imperfections include some clear coat deglazing on the roof and rear door windowsill, a scratch in the wood over the front wheel, touched up chip, lots of delamination on the light "wood" framing, 2 rock chips in the windshield, some bubbling and chips down low, and various scratches.
Interior
The dark blue of the exterior is matched with the dark blue interior beginning on the door panels of vinyl, plastic, brushed aluminum switchgear plates, and carpeted lowers. It's hard to imagine a family wagon without some simulated wood trim and it's here on each door contouring around door open handles. Blue leather bucket seats occupy the front with some patina creasing and wear on the driver's seat, evident use on the others, and some displaced leather on the passenger front seat. There is a third row of seating in the back, and when folded down creates a substantial open and flat space covered in nice blue carpet. Up front, it does not veer from the LTD sedan with a horizontal speedometer to 85 mph, column shifter, A/C panel, and updated AM/FM/CD radio and everything is in very nice condition. The plush blue carpet shows minimal wear, and the long, blue headliner is in great shape.
Drivetrain
Ford's familiar 5.0 liter EFI engine is under the hood showing usage but clean for its age, backed by a rebuilt AOD 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission that sends power to the Ford 8.8" in back with 3.08 gears.
Undercarriage
A tow hitch begins our scan of the underside which presents in overall very clean and dry conditions. The dual exhaust connects via an H-pipe then continues on in tandem through stock style mufflers, finding an exit after heading east and west to the side. Power disc brakes are in front and power drums in back while suspension consists of coil springs front and rear with a 4 link assisting in back.
Drive-Ability
It's like driving an LTD through a tunnel, only the tunnel is attached to your car! It's a long way back there but the wide rear window allows for plenty of visibility and the engine, rated at a mere 150 horsepower, adequately pulls the car, aided by the free breathing of the dual exhaust. We note the odometer, trip odometer, and passenger rear window not working. The passenger front window needs help going down, but all other functions on board operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Sure, the red carpet would roll out for you at Radwood. But who wouldn't love to see this at any car show? It's incredibly original, a rare find, and the wagon life brings back memories for millions of Americans. Wagons have been a hot segment of the collector market for over a decade now, and we expect this one is at the mall for a short vacation between owners.
