What is the radiator?
A radiator is a important component of the engine’s cooling system that disperses a mix of antifreeze and water, which releases some of the heat while taking in cool air before returning to the engine.
Tips for maintaining a radiator:
-Pay attention to the coolant level, ensure a 50/50 ratio of coolant to water, and tighten the radiator cap as much as possible after filling with coolant.
-Be careful when checking the coolant level in the radiator. When checking the coolant, turn off the engine and wait for it to cool. Then, slowly and carefully open the cap with a thick cloth.
-Rinse regularly. Flushing the coolant helps remove rust, scale deposits, and other forms of residue that can build up and clog the radiator over time. It is recommended to flush the radiator every 12 months or 30,000 miles.
-Every time you change the oil, check the radiator hoses for obvious cracks or leaks. If you notice any cracking or other signs of deterioration, replace the hose(s) to avoid running into problems.
-If any electrical work was done to the vehicle while the radiator was installed, you should check for any stray currents as they could cause corrosion, leading to radiator failure.
What is the Radiator Cooling Fan?
The radiator cooling fan is one of the components that make up the vehicle cooling system and is usually installed between the radiator and the engine. In some vehicles, the fan is located between the grille and the radiator. Its role is to cool the radiator and reduce the temperature of the engine, thus preventing the car from overheating.
Signs that the radiator cooling fan is not working:
-Engine overheating
The radiator and radiator cooling fan are responsible for absorbing all the heat from the engine (through the coolant) and blowing it away from the vehicle. So if your engine starts to overheat, it's a sign that something may be wrong with your radiator or radiator cooling fan.
-Engine running hot at low speeds
The radiator cooling fan is not necessary at high speeds, so it is usually only activated at low speeds. Therefore, if the engine overheats when the car is traveling at low speed, and the heat dissipates when it is traveling at high speed, it is almost certain that the radiator cooling fan failure causes overheating.
-Fan not spinning at idle
Since the radiator cooling fan only starts at idle or low speed, you can simply turn on the car and monitor the fan to see if the radiator cooling fan is working properly. If the fan does not start after the engine reaches normal idle temperature, the radiator fan may not work properly.
If the outside temperature is below 60-70 °F (16-21 °C), this method may not work. The outside temperature may never reach the point where it forces the radiator cooling fan to start.
