What is ABS sensor？

An anti-lock braking system (ABS) is a vehicle safety system that allows the wheels of a car to maintain tractive contact with the road surface while braking, preventing the wheels from locking up (ceasing rotation) and avoiding uncontrolled skidding. It is an automated system that uses the principles of cadence braking.

ABS generally offers improved vehicle control and decreases stopping distances on dry and slippery surfaces. However, on loose gravel, ice or snow covered surfaces, ABS can increase braking distance, although still improving vehicle steering control.

ABS Sensors - Fast Facts

1. The ABS sensor is typically located in each wheel hub/rotor on a four channel ABS system. Some rear wheel drive applications have the sensor mounted in the rear differential.
2. Generally these sensors will fail as a result of clogging from metallic debris, brake dust or dirt due to exposure to the harsh elements.
3. A failing sensor can illuminate the MIL or ABS warning lamp, and may cause failure of the anti-lock braking system to operate safely and properly.
4. An ABS sensor can be visually inspected and the wire winding and sensor harness can be tested for opens, shorts and proper factory specified resistance with an ohm meter.

What does the ABS sensor do and how?
In short the ABS sensor, monitors the wheel’s speed and rotation to optimise both brake and traction control via the ABS. Typically installed at the wheel, it consists of two components: a reluctor wheel or tone ring positioned on the axle, which rotates with the wheel, and either a magnetic or hall effect sensor which sends the data to the ABS control module. The wheel speed data is used to determine when to activate the ABS and how much pressure it should safely apply to stop the vehicle without locking up the brakes. The wheel speed information is also provided to other systems (engine, transmission, navigation, and chassis control systems) via data lines by the ABS control unit. 

Point：

If any of the warning lights above are illuminated, there is brake pedal judder while braking at low speeds or the wheels lock up while braking, then there is probably a fault somewhere within the ABS system.
Possible causes:

1. Corroded, cracked or swollen ABS ring.
2. ABS ring blocked, damaged, missing teeth or windows.
3. ABS sensor out of position.
4. Damaged ABS sensor from impact with road debris.
