Item description from the seller
This is a New un-opened CD It is the evaluation software of the StarOffice 7 Suite.
StarOffice 7 was a commercial office suite, not a free software program, though it had a close relationship with the free and open-source OpenOffice.org. While not free, it was significantly more affordable than Microsoft Office. Sun Microsystems, which later became part of Oracle, initially sold StarOffice for around $70 and release an evaluation version for businesses and corporations.
It included a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, database, and other tools. Later, Sun offered the software for free through Google Pack, but only for Windows users.
Some History/Trivia
StarOffice was born in 1985 (with the original name of StarWriter) as a commercial alternative to WordStar and developed by StarDivision, a German company founded that year in Lüneburg by Marco Börries (then sixteen years old) with the first proceeds of the program. StarDivision was then purchased by Sun Microsystems in August 1999 for 73.5 million dollars. Sun's strategy was to provide an alternative to the Microsoft Office product, the most popular software of this type on the market. In 2000, Sun decided to release the sources of StarOffice to the open source community, and so the OpenOffice.org project was born. This strategy allowed Sun to access rapid development with lower costs.
