In 1854 Congress
created the Kansas Territory. The conflict began immediately over the issue of
whether Kansas would become a free or slave state. Passions ran high on both sides, with the
conflict raging from 1854 to 1861. The
conflict came to be known as “Bleeding Kansas” and is often considered a sort
of dress rehearsal for the soon to erupt US Civil War. Considered an excellent
book for Grades 6 & up.
