Over the past seven years numerous kits have been released by various manufacturers ranging from major jet fighters like the Gripen and Viggen to lesser-known trainers and reciprocating engines. While some modelers may have fond memories of Swedish Air Force models by Airfix the former ESCI Italeri and Heller the 2008 release of Hasegawa's 1/48 Draken—an item that company staff stated was developed with the European market in mind—has sparked a frenzy of interest from manufacturers large and small both in the East and the West. Of particular note is Tarangas founded in Sweden in 2009. Through strong collaboration with Special Hobby Tarangas has established itself by releasing a succession of kits previously unavailable in the definitive vacuum including the 1/48 Viggen and Lansen models and the 1/72 Tsunan. Hobby Boss Revell and Kitty Hawk are also working hard to provide users with new experiences through the addition of new molds and updated parts. Sweden which maintained a neutral policy during the Cold War developed its own aircraft most of which were manufactured by SAAB. Their unique shapes incorporate a design philosophy focused on readiness and continuous operation. Combined with a somewhat mystical Nordic image they exude a unique allure distinct from Eastern and Western aircraft. Their operational patterns are also unique with aircraft stored in underground bases scattered throughout the country the sense of wanderlust the tension of using highways as runways and simple structures that allow even reservists to inspect and maintain them with short turnaround times (the time required for re-deployment).
