"John Jordan was born in Dublin in 1930 of a working-class family. He was educated at the Christian Brothers and U.C.D., to which he won an Entrance Scholarship in English, Irish and Latin. At U.C.D. he took a First Class Honours B.A. in English and French. In 1952 he won a National University of Ireland Travelling Studentship in English Language and Literature and from 1953-55 was a member of Pembroke College, Oxford, where he chaired the Art Committee, was President of the Johnson Society, and acted with the O.UD.S. He returned to U.C.D. in 1955 as Assistant to the Professor of English; in 1959 he became Assistant Lecturer and in 1965 College Lecturer. He resigned from U.C.D. in 1969 in what he describes as a generous and amicable accommodation". He took an M.A. in 1954 and an Oxford B.Litt. and has lectured at Princeton, U.S.A. John Jordan is recognised as one of Ireland's most erudite and wide-ranging critics and he has also published much poetry of distinction. His short stories have been appearing in periodicals for many years but have not previously been collected in book form."
