1982 AMC Eagle Kammback
Up for sale is my 1982 AMC Eagle Kammback, last on the roadways in the early 2010s. It is a desert no rot rock solid only surface rust (underneath) vehicle as it was a Yuma, AZ Car its entire life until 2020 when I purchased it. Since then it has been kept indoors or covered. The body wears its original factory enamel paint which is in incredibly good shape for as much as the car was in the desert sun. The car has paint blemishes on the roof and hood as shown as well as a couple dents seen in photos. It looks like the car also once had a beacon light in the center of the roof as there is a small hole drilled but would easily be welded up. Car is all original, still even wearing its factory exhaust and AMC at the factory Ziebart Factory Rust Protection. This car shared the same body as the Gremlin and was the last use of the Gremlin body in the American sales market. Its essentially a factory 4WD Gremlin! I have replaced all the former broken and brittle rocker and fender cladding around the wheels with nice pliable ones from a north eastern donor, including rare rear bumper end caps that usually are always missing (these endcaps came off a wrecked SX/4 - the rubber cladding came off a rusty Eagle that was parted out). I also replaced the former sunbaked taillights and rear corner marker lights with nice OEM used originals.
AMC only built 520 1982 Kammbacks before the discontinuation of production, and this is the only Kammback I have ever seen (Could very well be the only one in existence like this, I think it may have been used as a display model at a 1982 premiere car show) that is this well optioned with the following;
Black on black interior/exterior - Select Trac 4 wheel drive system AMC Eagles are famous for. Switch from 2wd to 4wd while driving! Truly groundbreaking for the time, especially in a compact hatchback.
• 258 cu. In. 6 cyl AMC engine
• 4 speed manual transmission
• Factory Air Conditioning Group
• Eagle Sport Gauge Pack
o (Vacuum, Voltage, Analog Clock, Oil Pressure with Instrument Panel Tachometer)
• 3 spoke leather wrapped sport steering wheel with tilt column
• Power Front Disc Brakes
• Power Steering
• Rear Window Defrost
• Eagle Sport 5 spoke alloy wheels (most common on SX/4 and Eagle Sport Wagon, rarely seen from factory on Kammback)
• Intermittent Windshield Wipers
• Aftermarket AM-FM Stereo with Tape Deck (stock AMC stereo will be included)
• Deluxe SX/4-style interior (Dual bucket seats, premium cloth inserts)
• Front Skid Plate
• Genuine AMC Dealer Accessory Bumper Hitch with trailer light wiring
• Roof Rack (missing stainless strips as shown)
• Rear Air Deflector (missing, but same as Gremlin - however mounting holes look they never had screws in them)
• Dual Remote Side Mirrors, passenger vanity mirror and map light dome light
The car has an impressive 196,500 miles (Yes since AMC built good quality long lasting cars, they were the first in 1982 of American manufacturers to have a 6 digit odometer) on the factory optional 258 with 4 speed manual transmission.
This car was parked when it was due to the need of a new clutch. It does not currently run as I was planning on rebuilding or replacing the high mileage engine when doing the clutch. I am selling because I currently have 40 cars and need to downsize. Recently I reacquired my same Eagle Wagon I drove in college and would like to focus on that one and let this incredibly unique and rare Kammback go to someone who could potentially do a full restoration on her like she deserves.
As seen in the photos, the car has no rot anywhere throughout the body or beneath the car. The bottom of the car has some surface rust and suspension components have some as well. The worst rust is some corrosive rust in the battery tray which can be cleaned up or replaced. The front seats need to be redone and the interior plastic trim as well as dash pad have cracking from the desert sun. A new black dash pad is included in the sale (shown). The rear cargo plastic below the rear hatch has the worst sun damaged and has been removed but will be included in the sale. I have also found a very weathered but intact build sheet that will be included with the car.
Replacement parts include the following:
• Intact plastic/rubber rear bumper spacer (between body metal below license plate and above rear bumper – impossible to find, a Kammback-only part I paid nearly $400 for, the only one I have ever found intact)
• Replacement dash pad (shown), rear bumper nerf strip, and misc interior plastic pieces
This sale will also include a 50,000 mile 258 engine removed from a running Eagle OR for $1000 extra a 1980 AMC Concord DL 2 door that has a great running 63,000 mile engine to replace the tired Kammback engine as well as factory power windows & locks to install to the Kammback to add to its already impressive options list. The Concord also has black interior/plastic pieces that would be good to have as extras/replacements for the Kammback as well as black door panels for the power windows and locks.
This vehicle has a clear title. The reason for the "exceeds mechanical limits" is because someone didnt realize in the 90s the car had a 6 digit odometer or was considered too old to matter. I am sure I am forgetting some things but if you have any questions, please ask. I also have more photos for anyone curious of anything else including with the fender cladding removed (original cladding was brittle, broken and sunbaked) proving theres no rust in the rockers, fenders or quarters, or the 80 Concord and a video of it running. I have been in the AMC hobby now for over 25 years and have been to many American Motors Owners shows, seen personal and public AMC collections and have never seen a Kammback this well loaded with options, not even in pictures online.
If you have wanted one, this is the holy grail as its one of 520 1982 models built and could very well be the only one in existence built this way! It is optioned with all the "Sport" package accessories but the Kammback never had a Sport trim package.
Car is located just outside of Rock Hill, SC. Buyer to pick up within 2 weeks of purchase paid in full. I can deliver within the SE for an additional fee, as well as deliver to the American Motors Owners 2026 show in South Bend Indiana in June.
Thanks for looking and good luck if interested.
