I'm selling my 1999 Volkswagen Cabrio GLS in Tornado Red with black leather interior. I bought this car new and have been the only owner. It’s powered by a 2.0-liter inline-four paired with a five-speed manual transmission and currently has 172,362 miles.
The car spent most of its life in California, where it was garaged all but one year (when it was under a carport). In 2010, I drove it to Florida to stay with my mom near the Space Center. After she had a stroke in 2011, I ended up staying in Florida, and the car was hardly driven after that. It’s been garage-kept the entire time in Florida.
The original electric black convertible soft top still works. The fabric is in great condition, but about a year and a half ago, the seam above the rear window came unglued (see video). It’s been covered with a tarp ever since. The black leather interior is in excellent condition overall, as you can see in the photos. There is some slight wear on the driver’s seat bolster and steering wheel.
The driver's side seat can be adjusted forward and backward but needs a little nudging to lock in place. The plastic sliders are most likely the culprit and would need to be replaced to get it working good as new. The seat height adjuster works perfectly. The passenger seat works properly in all respects.
It runs and drives well. Over the years, I’ve had work done on the shifter, bearings, and other small maintenance items. The coolant was replaced and a small leak was fixed. The ABS and A/C are currently non-functional—my mechanic wasn’t able to source replacement parts for the ABS pump or A/C heater box, but both can likely be found through salvage or other avenues. So ABS light is always on, as is the emergency brake light. That said, the car has remained solid and dependable overall, and it just had a brand-new battery installed.
Cosmetic work includes a repaired dent on the passenger door, some rust repair above the windshield and passenger window, and repainting of the bumpers.
I’m including the original owner’s manuals and the original convertible boot cover. Fun car for the right buyer!
