This ethnographic study of indigenous rights in Puerto Rico examines the historical, institutional, and interactional dimensions of Taíno/Boricua activism in Puerto Rico. The study shows how activists have reconfigured historical narratives, leading to the recent public emergence of Taíno/Boricua as a social identification. The study draws on participant observation, interviews, and oral histories, as well as methods of linguistic anthropology. Major themes are competing historical narratives on Taíno extinction, ethnoracial regimes in Puerto Rico, and Taíno heritage and political mobilization. A glossary is included.
