What is an oxygen sensor
The oxygen sensor, also known as a lambda sensor, was developed in the late 1960s by Dr. Gunter Bauman for the Robert Bosch GmbH company. This sensor is an electronic device used to measure the proportional amount of oxygen in a liquid or gas. The original oxygen sensor was made using ceramic coated zirconia and platinum, the current style of sensor is made more efficient than the original style sensors.
How to replace an oxygen sensor
1.Park the vehicle on a level surface. Set the parking brake and open the hood.
The function of oxygen sensors
2.With the engine off and cool, locate the defective oxygen sensor in the exhaust manifold or pipe. If necessary, lift the front of the vehicle and support it with jack stands.
3.Disconnect the wire connector at the defective oxygen sensor. Spray the sensor threads and fitting with penetrating spray and let soak for a time.
4.Remove the oxygen sensor from the exhaust system. Use an oxygen sensor socket to reduce potential for damage.
5.For threaded oxygen sensors, apply a slight amount of anti-seize compound to the threads and install the new sensor. For flange mounted oxygen sensors, install a new gasket and tighten the mounting bolts.
6.Reattach the wire connector from the sensor.
The function of oxygen sensor
Oxygen sensor is located within the emissions control system. When functioning, the O2 sensor sends data to the management computer located within the engine. In your car, a functioning O2 sensor ensures that your engine is running at top performance. Additionally, this sensor keeps your emissions in check and alerts you to when emissions are too excessive.
