The Function of an Automotive Fuel Pump
The automotive fuel pump is the heart of the fuel delivery system. Its primary role is to draw fuel from the gas tank and deliver it consistently and steadily to the engine's fuel injection system (such as the fuel injectors) at a specific pressure and flow rate.
Specifically, its functions include:
- Fuel Delivery: To draw fuel from the tank against gravity.
- Pressure Generation: To provide sufficient and stable pressure to the fuel system, ensuring the fuel injectors can atomize the fuel effectively to form an optimal air-fuel mixture for combustion.
- Maintaining Flow Rate: To supply an adequate and continuous flow of fuel according to the engine's demands under various operating conditions (e.g., idling, acceleration, high-speed cruising).
Modern vehicles typically use an electric fuel pump located inside the fuel tank. When operating, fuel flows through the pump motor, which cools and lubricates it. Therefore, avoiding consistently running the vehicle on a very low fuel level can help extend the fuel pump's service life.
Precautions for Installing a Fuel Pump
Golden Rule: Safety First! The fuel system is highly dangerous.
- Strictly No Open Flames or Sparks:
Absolutely no smoking, lighters, or any form of spark generation in the work area.
Ensure the workspace is well-ventilated to prevent fuel vapor accumulation.
- Relieve Fuel System Pressure:
You MUST relieve the fuel system pressure before disconnecting any fuel lines. High-pressure fuel can spray out violently, creating a severe fire hazard and risk of injury.
Common method: Locate and remove the fuel pump fuse or relay in the fuse box. Then, crank the engine until it stalls.
- Disconnect the Battery:
Always disconnect the negative battery terminal before starting work. This prevents accidental electrical sparks and protects the electrical system.
- Always Replace the Seal:
The sealing gasket between the tank and the fuel pump assembly must be replaced with a new one. Reusing the old gasket will almost certainly cause dangerous fuel leaks. You can lubricate the new gasket with a drop of oil or vaseline for installation, but never use incompatible grease.
- Maintain Extreme Cleanliness:
Thoroughly clean the area around the fuel pump assembly on top of the tank before opening it. Prevent any dirt, debris, or contaminants from falling into the fuel tank, as they can severely damage the fuel system and engine.
- Handle the Assembly with Care:
Be gentle when removing and installing the fuel pump assembly. Be careful not to bend or damage the float arm (fuel level sender), as this will cause inaccurate fuel gauge readings.
- Proper Connection and Leak Test:
When reconnecting fuel lines and electrical connectors, ensure they click fully into place.
A leak test is mandatory before starting the engine after installation: Turn the ignition to "ON" (without starting) a few times to pressurize the system. Then, carefully inspect all connection points and around the new seal for any sign of fuel leakage.
- Handle Old Fuel Properly:
If the old fuel in the tank has been stored for too long or is contaminated, it's advisable to drain it and dispose of it properly. Do not use contaminated fuel with the new pump.
