Fourteen years in the making. That’s not hyperbole — recording began in 1994 and the album didn’t see release until November 23, 2008, making it one of the most notoriously delayed records in rock history. The budget reportedly ballooned past $13 million. Axl fired and replaced virtually every original member, scrapped entire completed versions of the album multiple times, and at one point brought in producer Roy Thomas Baker — the man behind Queen’s A Night at the Opera — who convinced him to scrap and re-record everything from scratch. Brain learned Josh Freese’s drum parts note-for-note from transcriptions with a teleprompter before reinterpreting them. A leaked demo wound up in the hands of New York Mets catcher Mike Piazza. Harley-Davidson accidentally released “Better” in an advertisement before the album came out. The title track was banned in China.
The album was banned in China due to lyrics in the lead single, the title track. By release day, Slash, Duff, Izzy, Matt, and Steven were all long gone. The only original member besides Axl present was keyboardist Dizzy Reed. The lineup included Robin Finck, Richard Fortus, Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal on guitars, Tommy Stinson on bass, Frank Ferrer and Brain on drums, and DJ Ashba. It’s a different band in every way that matters — and yet it’s undeniably Axl Rose.
The album blends hard rock with industrial and electronic influences, a shift from the band’s previous blues and punk-based music. Upon release, it debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum. Whether you love it or hate it, there’s nothing else that sounds quite like it — and there never will be again.
