Theory and Practice in Distributed Systems are the compiled papers from the Unifying Theory and Practice in Distributed Systems International Workshop held in 1994. The presented papers are noted for bridging theoretical foundations, like consistency models and fault tolerance, with practical implementations in distributed computing. And in doing so, this volume bridges the gap between the separate worlds of theoretical researchers who design abstract algorithms and the practical engineers who build real-world systems. Theory and Practice in Distributed Systems is considered a significant historical marker in computer science by its first formalization of many of the "modern" problems faced today in cloud computing and microservices. It is credited with moving the discipline beyond just "math" or just "coding” by its pushing for a disciplined engineering approach to distributed computing.
