For consignment, a 1990 Cadillac Fleetwood coupe, a garage-kept, 2 door land yacht with a landau top with opera lights, fender skirts, was recently treated to new head gaskets, new fuel injectors and new spark plugs, and is a 2 owner car
Exterior
Two stage Antelope Firemist is an extravagant name for beige which is in remarkable condition on this pampered car. The decidedly square car, now 34 years old, harkens back to a time when square cars were becoming round and remnant holdouts were still being produced to appeal to Cadillac devotees who wanted long, soft riding cars with a substantial trunk. The long horizontal panels are supported by the fenders and a door that, in profile, goes on forever and the frame of the doors is sculpted into the roof. Flush composite headlights are accompanied by cornering lights of nearly equal size while the taillights are tall, vertical slits. The vinyl Landau top envelopes the rear seats like a limousine and is in good condition with encased rear window and third brake light. Wire wheel covers top 15-inch steel wheels wrapped in 70 series tires with a mid 2022 date code. The metalwork and paint are very good on this car and we could not find any glaring imperfections on the exterior.
Interior
Simple, straight, and practical was the name of the game in this era and is exemplified by the boxy door panels in tan plastic and hardware surrounded by plastic woodgrain trim. We note a small tear and separation on the driver's side vinyl armrest where undoubtedly countless hours of hosting an elbow on relaxing drives occurred. Diamond tufted bucket seats in front wear Antelope leather, edge piping, and the Cadillac wreath embroidered into each seat back. The seats have held up well and look comfortable and this condition is mirrored in the rear seats which is configured for two but has seatbelts for three. The leather wrapped steering wheel holds an airbag and leads to the digital dash that displays in green digits common for the era. Everything is arranged horizontally, and the lower dash is adorned with more plastic woodgrain trim and houses an information center and A/C push button controls. In the center, the upscale Signature Series Delco radio remains and has AM/FM/Cassette and an EQ. We note some sagging of the vinyl on the glove box but the rest of the dash looks clean and intact. The plush beige carpet is in decent condition and has been protected by fitted Cadillac carpeted mats. GM's adhesive has given up the ghost and the headliner is sagging heavily and will need to be repaired or replaced.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a driver quality 4.5 liter V8, fuel injected and rated at 180 horsepower. Our consignor states the car has newer head gaskets, fuel injectors, spark plugs, and battery. The transverse mounted motor is linked to a 4T60E 4-speed automatic transmission that keeps power in front with 2.97 gear ratio. Power disc brakes are supplied up front and power drums out back.
Undercarriage
Driver quality underneath with some surface rust but no apparent leaks. There is grime build up on the knuckles, but the flat panels and other parts of the underside are relatively clean. The single exhaust travels through an original equipment muffler before exiting discreetly under the car, out of sight. Both front and rear have independent suspension with MacPherson struts in front and coil springs in back.
Drive-Ability
The big door swings open and allows easy access to the sofa-like seat where we settle in for a short loop around the testing route. The 4.5 delivers good power for cruising and the ride is pillowy. You will not confuse this Caddy for a slalom car, but straight tracking is soft and luxurious. The A/C is not working and the ABS and Brake Warning lights flash intermittently. Beyond that, all functions work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
A fine running two door luxury car from 1990, at a time when Cadillac still meant "you've arrived" and garnered the respect of onlookers. Thirty four years later, it's a testament to big floating cars that your father or grandfather swore by and rebought time and time again. If the view of your youth was from the back seat, now's your chance to take the wheel, and see exactly what Pop was talking about!
